The Great Sanchi Stupa had been constructed by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE. This stupa was built over the relics of Lord Buddha and the chattra; the parasol like structure has been built to shelter and pay homage to the relics. The nucleus of the stupa had been built of bricks while the rest of the stupa is a stone structure. It is considered to be the oldest stone structure of the country. The four gateways guarding the stupa are known as torans. The torans are carved with tales from earlier lives of Lord Buddha and also symbolise harmony, affection, bravery and faith. There are four symbols seen on the stupa; the tree represents enlightenment, the elephant and the lotus represents birth, the stupa represents parinirvana and the wheel represents the preaching of the first sermon.
The second stupa is carved with carvings of makaaras, kinnars, yakshas, yakshis, nagas and human figures with fish tails. The third stupa consists of two caskets at the centre of the stupa. These caskets consist of the relics of the two great disciples of Lord Buddha; Sariputra and Mandgalyayana. These caskets consist of fragments of bone, semi-precious stones like crystals, lapaz lazuli, pearls and sandalwood. These stupas are less decorated and do not consist of gateways.
Visit the beautifuuly sculpted West Pillat. It consists of the carvings of a Bodhi Tree, located on a pedestal, with a female and male figure offering their prayers to the sacred tree along with other devotees. The Ashoka Pillar is a huge structure with valuable Brahmi inscriptions on it. This pillar had been carved out from a single piece of stone.
